Since 2018, Red Deer Players has supported dozens of local playwrights in bringing fresh stories to life. Over our seasons, we’ve presented more than 28 staged readings, giving writers a chance to test their work with live audiences and bridging the gap from manuscript to live production. Several have gone on to win awards and receive premieres both here in Red Deer and across Canada.

When a winter storm traps them together, long-held truths rise to the surface, forcing each of them to confront what they’ve been carrying alone. Delicates explores themes of resilience, shame, survival, chosen community, and the quiet ways people care for one another. The play examines how ordinary spaces can become places of refuge, and how connection often emerges through imperfect acts of kindness rather than grand gestures. Directed by Susanne Hermary |
Fran KimmelPlawrightFran Kimmel is an award-winning writer who moves happily between short stories, plays and novels. She is a proud playwright alum of Sylvan Lake Theatre Trail, SAW Play Festival, and the 10-Minute New Play Festival, and her work has received staged readings through Edmonton’s Script Salon and Red Deer Players’ Breaking Cover series. Her plays have won Scripts at Work and CBC Radio Play competitions and have been shortlisted for the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama. Fran was born and raised in Calgary and now calls Lacombe home.

We provide a director, cast, mini rehearsal process, and light dramaturgical support to your manuscript. It culminates with a public reading in the beautiful Snell Auditorium at the Red Deer Public Library. The reading is followed by a moderated question-and-answer period with your audience, so that you leave with new insight into your play from the inside out. Submissions usually open each spring for the following season. |
